WALMART TO SELL WILDOMAR PROPERTY

Late Thursday afternoon, City Mayor Marsha Swanson and senior City Staff were informed by Mr. Philip Serghini, Walmart’s Director of Government and Public Affairs that Walmart plans to sell the 22 acre parcel located at the southwest corner of Monte Vista Avenue and Bundy Canyon Road in Wildomar, California. Prior to the City’s July 1, 2008 incorporation, Walmart had acquired the property and planned to develop a 185,682 square foot supercenter retail and grocery store that would have provided employment for 300 local residents and additional sales and property tax revenues for the City. Mr. Serghini cited changes in Walmart business strategy and a focus on expanding its Mobile Express Scan & Go Pick Up services and introducing new technologies at existing outlets as reasons for the pending sale.

An obvious disappointment to the City and region as this development project was fully entitled and approved for building plan review and construction. The desirable property adjacent the I-15 freeway and intersected by Bundy Canyon Road is expected to be marketed by Walmart’s real estate group.

Mayor Marsha Swanson expressed disappointment in the corporation’s decision and stated, “After many years of non-productive use of the property, the City looks forward to working efficiently with the new buyer to develop a successful project that provides a long-term benefit to the residents and complements the Southwest Riverside County region.”
